David Emerick, CPA, Partner

David Emerick founded Emerick & Company, P.C. in 1990 after being in public accounting for ten years prior to that. Mr. Emerick graduated from William Jewell College in 1984 with a degree in Accounting and Political Science, and received his accreditation as C.P.A. in 1985. Mr. Emerick has over twenty-five years experience in the auditing field, concentrating his practice to not-for-profits, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) projects, and 401(k) audits. Mr. Emerick has been qualified as an expert in accounting in the U.S. Federal Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Missouri, and has testified as an expert.

Mr. Emerick, and the firm, on numerous occasions have been appointed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee to prepare trust reports on behalf of the debtor-in possession. He has been certified as an expert and testified concerning Forensic accounting in numerous cases in the Circuit Courts of Jackson County and Platte County. Mr. Emerick has served as a panel member of a task force discussing fraud in HUD projects.

Mr. Emerick serves on the “Peer Review Oversight Committee” for the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants, and is a qualified “Peer Reviewer” of other CPA firms. He has also serves as an expert on peer reviews of service organization control engagement (SOC) and SSAE 16 engagements.

Mr. Emerick also serves as Chairman since 2012 for Heartland Outreach, “Hope Dental” a 501 C 3 not-for profit organization whose purpose is to provide mobile dental services to the children of Kansas City.

James Flanagan, CPA, Partner

Jim Flanagan, C.P.A is a graduate of Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, with a B.S. degree in Accounting. Jim has many years of practice in tax, auditing, and accounting services including governmental and HUD compliance. Before joining Emerick & Company, he was a partner in a local C.P.A firm for over 30 years with a focus on business and individual tax planning and compliance. He works with clients throughout the U.S. and has experience in many areas of tax compliance. He is a member of the AICPA and MSCPA. Jim currently serves as an Officer in several local service organizations, including the Kiwanis Club of Kansas City and Native Sons & Daughters of Greater Kansas City. As an Eagle Scout, he has a longtime commitment to the Boy Scouts of America, and continues to hold leadership roles in Troop and District committees.

Rick Hann, CPA, Partner

Rick Hann, CPA earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Pittsburg State University and a Masters in Accountancy from the University of Missouri. Prior to merging with Emerick & Company in 2013, he operated his public accounting firm (Rick Hann, CPA, LLC) for many years in the Kansas City Northland. He is a member of the MSCPA. He currently serves at North Heartland Community Church in several different areas, including their financial consulting ministry.

Kristy Helt, CPA, Partner

Kristy Helt, CPA, is a graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting, and has over 30 years of experience in private and public accounting.  Ms. Helt specializes in financial management and tax with an emphasis in cash management and budgeting.  She has assisted a wide range of business from local small business to complex companies with international sales.
